Fenland Trophy Meeting promises weekend extravaganza of racing.
The Fenland Grass Track Clubs’ (FGTC) first meeting of the 2009 season will take place over the weekend of 27th & 28th June 2009.
The two day Fenland Trophy meeting is being held at Greenacres Farm, Raveley Road, Wood Walton, Huntingdon, Cambs. PE28 5YX, the track will be signposted from junction 15 of the A1.
The two day meeting sees riders competing from the age of 6 to 70+ and racing on machines ranging from 2009 models to pre war. The Saturday sees racing for youth and Vintage classes.
You will be able to see the riders of the future as well as many from the past. Bill Barley (Covington) veteran rider and star of the sport has entered in several classes and will be trying to ensure he gets bragging rights over his son Lee also from Covington.
Other local riders riding on the Saturday include Dave Lambert (Peterborough), Julian & Tom Meakins in the sidecars (Spalding), Jacob Taylor (Wisbech), Amy Taylor the reigning British Youth Senior Champion (Wisbech), Adam Harper (Wimblington) who is returning after a nasty accident at work and Ashley Hill (Peterborough). All the youth races have been sponsored by MedicMart (01733 247752) The Peterborough based First aid company will also provide the First Aid cover for the meeting.
Practice will be at 11.00 with the first race at 12.00. There will be a beer tent on site all day along with hot and cold refreshments; the club has also arranged a large screen television for the Beer tent in the evening.
It is expected the racing will be finished by 16.30 to allow anybody wanting to watch the speedway GP from Cardiff plenty of time.
The Sunday meeting, the Fenland Trophy Meeting is for adult solos and sidecar and with the sponsorship deals from Speedway Services Ltd (Terrington St Clement, 01553 829197), the club has attracted a top class entry in all classes including several former British Champions. Again many local riders will be trying to get amongst the top stars.
The 250cc solos sees Oliver Rayson (Bury St Edmunds) start the defence of the JRM 250cc Challenge Series, with the prize of a 250cc JRM engine for the winner over the clubs two meetings. He will be hard pressed by two former National Champions in Lee Street (Ashford) and Adam Shipp (Diss) along with local riders Amy Taylor (Wisbech) and Adam Harper (Wimblington).
The 350cc solos ride in the first round of the Speedway Services Ltd 350cc solo series and Dave Mears (Canterbury) looks to be the likely winner but rising star Tom Perry (Wolverhampton) will be expected to challenge, club stalwart Glenn Waterfield (Higham Ferrers also competes in this class.
The Speedway Services Ltd 500cc solo series round one entry is again headed by Dave Mears but Harland Cook (Watford) and Scott Campos (Ipswich) will be trying to get a good start to the series.
The 500cc sidecar entry includes last years British Championship runners up Scott Dunn and Natasha Bartlett (Brandon), but with two heats they are not likely to have it all their own way with Tony Cook & Daniel Crawford (Andover), Dave Carvill & Karl Webb (Manchester) and Gary Southgate & Adam Young (Ramsey) all looking to stamp their mark on the meeting.
The small 1000cc Sidecar class is headed by Former British Masters Champions Colin Blackbourn & Martyn Smith (Skegness) although Colin Pardoe & David Williams (Kidderminster) are starting to pressure the top teams and will also be looking for a good result.
The Pre 75 Solo Open class and Upright Solo open classes see the biggest entries of the day. Local riders are well represented with Stuart Chapman (Wellingborough), Bill Barley (Covington), Lee Barley (Covington), Dave Lambert (Peterborough), Glenn Waterfield (Higham Ferrers), Dave Lambert (Peterborough), Lee Barley (Covington), Bernie Waterfield (Rushden) and John Underwood (Northampton) likely to be in amongst the front runners.
As on the Saturday practice is at 11.00 with the first race, of 40 plus races, at 12.30. The beer tent will be open all day and the hot and cold refreshments will also be available again.
Admission charges for the meeting are £4 for adults and £2 for concessions on the Saturday with Under 14s free, and £8 for adults and £4 for concessions on the Sunday with Under 14s free.
A weekend ticket can also be purchased for £10 (£5 for Concessions).
This meeting is the first of two the club will be running in 2009 with the second meeting on the 5th & 6th September, which will be held at the Wood Hurst venue used in 2008.
