Motorcycle Grass Track Racing returns to Huntingdonshire.
For many years motorcycle Grass track racing was common on, many weekends throughout the summer in the Huntingdonshire and Cambridgeshire areas. In recent times the sport has dwindled in the area but with the formation of the Fenland Grass Track Club (FGTC) in 2006 this changed. The club has run four successful events but has had to use venues in Norfolk or near its border, now this is all to change and the Fastest Off Road Motorcycle Sport returns to the Huntingdonshire area.
The FGTC has managed to secure the use of an excellent venue near RAF Wyton just outside Huntingdon. The venue a large grass meadow provides the club the opportunity to run several different tracks on the 30 plus acre field. Thanks must go to the Landowner Andy Johnson from Oldhurst for the allowing the use of the field.
Continuing the theme from the clubs earlier meetings in Wisbech in 2006 & 2007 the club will be running the Fenland Trophy Meeting on Sunday 14th September 2008 and the meeting will be for adult and youth riders in solo, sidecar and quad classes. With the meeting being the final round for both the Eastern Centre and South Midland Centre championships a top class entry is expected. With our club sponsors Speedway Services Ltd, JRM and NORCAM medical services also sponsoring many of the events we hope to have a full 50+ race programme. Practice will be at 11.00 with the first race off at 12.30, there will be a beer tent on site and refreshments will be available all day.
For those new to Grass Track it is very much the sister sport of speedway with up to 12 solos or 6 sidecars racing round an oval track of approximately 450-500 metres in length, speeds can be well in excess of 70mph. There are classes for youth riders from the age of 6 and in the adults the solos are from 250cc to 500cc. There are also three sidecar classes with two 1000cc classes and one international sidecar class with 500cc engines. There are also classes for quads. For anybody interested in motor racing or speed events you are assured a good family day out with access to all the riders and their bikes throughout the meeting. Further details of entrance prices will be sent out nearer the time but make a note in your diaries for Sunday 14th September 2008.
