About the Club

The Fenland Grass Track Club was born during an e-mail conversation when the current chairman contacted the current Secretary over a totally unrelated Grass Track matter in December 2005.
The subject of past clubs in the area and the fact that there were several local riders arose and the seed was sown.  A few of the local riders were contacted in early January 2006 and showed an interest in forming a club. A couple of weeks later one Sunday afternoon they all met at a public house in March in Cambridgeshire and agreed on the next step.
A piece in the local papers as well as in the Speedway Star advertising a public meeting on a Sunday afternoon in mid February.
Some bikes were put on display and as well as recordings of Grass Track Racing.  The Response was overwhelming with over thirty people turning up, some travelling around eighty miles just to offer their past expertise on running a club & race meetings.
The enthusiasm was such that to keep the momentum going a club and committee was formed there and then, the name, 'The Fenland Grasstrack Club' being decided upon after a vote.
Redundant Track equipment from the former Spalding & Tongue End club was located and with the generosity of Norman Southgate a Crane lorry was hired to transport it to a new home with a promise to make a donation to the ACU Ben fund once the Fenland Club had some money in the bank.
Articles about the newly formed club were sent to the local press along with a plea for land to ride on. Some local property developers came forward with the offer of some on the outskirts of Wisbech and the committee decided as the momentum was so strong they would push forward with race meeting as soon as possible.
Due to the close proximity of a housing estate and a fairly full calendar of race meeting a Saturday meeting in early June 2006 was decided upon, although this nearly back fired when after everything was put in place it was discovered that it clashed with England's first game in the 2007 Soccer World Cup.
The meeting was a success despite burning temperatures leading up to and during the meeting coupled with fierce burning wind as well.
People still came forward during 2006 to help the newly formed club and trophies and shields from the former Hunts Falcons and Navenby Club were donated.
The committee decided to use these for the club championships and an awards evening was held in November that year to present them.

For 2007 the club decided to hold three meetings and after the sad loss of Norman Southgate, one of the founder members who was instrumental in getting the club of the ground, it was decided to make the last meeting of the year a memorial meeting in his memory.  This is to be an annual event within the club and a fitting tribute to someone has been a leading figure in the World of Motorcycle Grass Track Racing over many years.
